Launceston Church Grammar School is an Anglican co-educational day and boarding school in northern Tasmania. Known for educational excellence and a strong, values-based community, we provide rich learning and co-curricular experiences for students from Early Learning to Year 12.

Our Food Services team is a collaborative, hardworking and takes pride in providing exceptional food and dining experiences. Our accomplished team works closely with students, families and staff to create a warm, customer-focused environment and we are seeking an experienced Chef to join the team.

About the Role

Under the direction of the Catering Manager, the Boarding Chef plays an important role within our boarding community, supporting the delivery of a high-quality, nutritious catering service predominantly for our boarding students.

This role is well suited to a culinary professional who values healthy, well-balanced food services, enjoys contributing to a positive dining environment and understands the importance of food safety regulations.

This position is casual in nature and shifts are as rostered.

Duties and Responsibilities  

Food Preparation and Safety

  • Prepare and cook meals according to approved menus, ensuring food quality, taste, presentation, and appropriate portioning.  

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and hygienic kitchen environment, leading by example in exemplary professional standards. 

  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and correctly in accordance with standard operating procedures. 

  • Comply with and maintain all food safety standards and regulatory requirements at all times, ensuring safe food handling practices are consistently followed. 

  • Ensure correct food handling, storage, and labelling practices are maintained. 

 Kitchen Operations 

  • Work cooperatively with kitchen and service staff, communicating effectively to ensure smooth kitchen operations. 

  • Monitor and assist with stock rotation and inventory control, reporting stock levels and ordering requirements in a timely manner. 

  • Minimise food waste through efficient preparation, storage, and portion control. 

  • Assist with menu planning and development as required, contributing practical input based on operational needs. 

  • Meet service timelines and daily production requirements in a busy kitchen environment. 

  • Any other duties as required by your Manager.

About you

  • Minimum Experience – 5 years proven experience in a commercial kitchen (preferably in high-volume catering (e.g. schools, boarding, hospitality, healthcare or institutional settings) 

  • Strong knowledge of food safety, hygiene regulations, and compliance standards 

  • Proven ability to consistently produce high-quality meals at scale, with attention to nutrition, portion control, presentation, and dietary requirements

  • Experience working within structured menu systems, with ability to contribute practical input to menu planning and continuous improvement

  • Ability to work effectively in a busy, fast-paced kitchen environment, meeting strict service timeframes

  • Demonstrated capacity to maintain cleanliness, organisation, and safe kitchen practices at all times

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a small team environment

  • Positive, professional approach with a commitment to contributing to a welcoming and supportive boarding community

  • High level of reliability, flexibility, and ability to work independently during rostered shifts (including afternoons and weekends)

Qualifications and Requirements 

  • Current Working with Vulnerable People Registration - Department of Justice (or ability to obtain)

  • National Police Check, or willingness to obtain

  • Vocational Qualification in Commercial Cookery, or similar 

  • Food Safety Supervisor Certificate (desired) 

  • First Aid - HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting qualification 

  • First Aid - HLTAID009 - Provide CPR
