PhD Scholarship: Development of Methods to Characterise Regulated Single-Use Plastics

We are seeking an outstanding candidate for an Industry-sponsored PhD scholarships on a project entitled: Development of methods to characterise regulated single-use plastics and packaging. This exciting project is a partnership between Flinders University and the NSW Environmental Protection Authority. 

The project is inherently multidisciplinary, drawing on fundamental knowledge of both analytical chemistry, material characterisation, environmental science, and regulation. Depending on the candidate’s interests, it may also incorporate aspects of polymer life cycle analysis, recycling, policy, and standard development. Working closely with the NSW EPA, the student will help co-design practical, accessible methods to assess plastic composition and compliance against existing and proposed regulations, informing evidence-based regulation of single-use plastics in Australia.

The funded PhD scholarships will be based at Flinders University (Principal supervisor A/Prof. Melanie MacGregor) and include a 6 months internship at the NSW EPA in Sydney. Associate supervision will be provided by Dr Alexander Wotton, NSW EPA.

Benefits

• a stipend valued at $42,000 per annum (2026 rate subject to annual indexation) tax free 

• The scholarship will be awarded for 3.5 years

• a Research Training Program Fee Offset Scholarship to cover tuition fees for Australian Citizens, NZ Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Eligibility

• Be an Australian citizen; or New Zealand citizen; or have been granted permanent resident status; or are international citizens; and

• Meet PhD admission requirements including: have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8), including a research component of at least 6 months’ full-time study achieving Distinction (75%) OR including evidence of equivalent research experience, such as a substantial first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a competitive grant; and

• A degree in material science, chemistry, environmental science or equivalent engineering discipline. 

• Be available to commence as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University in semester 1, 2026; 

• Demonstrate strong work ethics, team work mindset and a true interest in environmental challenges.
