About the Role:

At STEPS, we're a purpose-driven not-for-profit creating real change in our communities. We believe everyone deserves the chance to grow towards a brighter future.

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program is a government-funded initiative that helps people aged 15+ build essential language, literacy, numeracy, and digital skills. Through personalised support and a warm, welcoming environment, the SEE Program empowers participants to overcome barriers, build confidence, and take meaningful steps towards work or further study.

As a Participant Support Officer, you'll work closely with our students to guide them through their learning journey by offering encouragement and practical support.

This part-time role is Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 2:30pm (25 hours), giving you the chance to enjoy work/life balance while still making a difference.

What You'll Do:

  • Build strong, trusting relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Provide ongoing support and guidance through the program lifecycle
  • Capture meaningful participant notes - keeping clear, supportive records helps us understand each person's journey
  • Identify barriers to participation (e.g. housing, wellbeing, employment challenges) and connect participants with appropriate external support services
  • Follow up with participants who are not attending to understand challenges and re-engage them
  • Collaborate with Trainers and site teams while maintaining appropriate confidentiality of participant information
  • Support community engagement activities and build relationships with external stakeholders and service providers

What Makes This Role Unique:

  • People-focused - you're not delivering training; you're working alongside participants to help them succeed
  • Guidance, not counselling - you listen, support, and connect participants with the right resources
  • Removing real-life barriers - your support helps keep participants engaged and motivated
  • Impact through relationships - your success is measured in trust, engagement, and watching participants thrive

About You:

  • Passionate about helping others and thrive on building meaningful connections
  • Ability to communicate with clarity, adapting your style to suit different situations
  • A compassionate and empathetic approach, creating a respectful space for participants
  • Confidence in managing sensitive conversations while maintaining professional boundaries
  • Organised and detail-minded, ensuring records are accurate and reliable
  • Ability to identify when to support vs when to refer to external services
  • Highly regarded: experience in roles such as support work, community services, employment services, education support, or customer service

What You Bring

  • Experience working with diverse learners and applying a learner-centred approach
  • Great administration and digital skills and ability to schedule meetings with participants and meet contractual requirements.
  • A creative, energetic and engaging delivery style
  • Strong interpersonal skills and genuine empathy for learners
  • Current Open Drivers Licence
  • Hold and maintain a current Working with Children card or Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Blue Card)
  • Be able to provide evidence of ongoing right to work in Australia
  • Ability to return an acceptable National Police Check

Why Join STEPS?

  • Be part of a values-driven organisation making real community impact
  • Work in a collaborative team environment
  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities
  • Make a genuine difference to people's lives every day
