The opportunity

We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Classroom Teacher to join our primary education team at our Forestville NSW campus. This is a contract position that offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of primary school students on the autism spectrum. As a Classroom Teacher, you will play a vital role in delivering tailored, evidence-based education within a supportive and inclusive classroom environment. You will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including special education coordinators, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists, to provide holistic support that addresses the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. This role is essential to Aspect's mission of ensuring every autistic student receives education that is accessible, engaging, and empowering.

Key responsibilities

1. Plan and deliver high-quality, differentiated lessons tailored to the individual learning needs, abilities, and interests of primary school students on the autism spectrum

2. Create and maintain a structured, supportive classroom environment that promotes safety, engagement, and positive behaviour

3. Implement evidence-based teaching strategies and curriculum modifications to support diverse learning styles and communication needs

4. Assess student progress regularly using a range of formal and informal assessment methods, and adjust teaching practices accordingly

5. Develop and maintain detailed individual education plans (IEPs) in collaboration with parents, carers, and other professionals

6. Communicate regularly and effectively with families regarding their child's progress, achievements, and areas for development

7. Collaborate with speech pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and other team members to provide coordinated, integrated support

8. Foster a culture of inclusion, respect, and acceptance within the classroom that celebrates neurodiversity

9. Implement positive behaviour support strategies and respond appropriately to challenging behaviours using trauma-informed approaches

10. Contribute to the development and implementation of school policies and procedures related to teaching and learning

11. Participate in professional development opportunities and stay current with best practice in autism education

12. Maintain detailed and accurate records of student progress, attendance, and incidents as required

What we're looking for

1. A recognised teaching qualification (Bachelor of Education or equivalent) and current registration with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) or willingness to obtain it

2. Demonstrated experience teaching primary-aged students, with a preference for experience in special education or autism-focused settings

3. Strong knowledge of evidence-based teaching practices, including differentiation, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and structured teaching approaches

4. Excellent understanding of autism spectrum disorder, including sensory processing differences, communication differences, and support strategies

5. Proven ability to create inclusive, safe, and structured learning environments that meet the diverse needs of students

6. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, families, colleagues, and multidisciplinary teams

7. Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with additional needs to succeed

8. Ability to adapt teaching methods and respond flexibly to individual student needs and preferences

9. Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities

10. A commitment to ongoing professional learning and staying current with best practice in special education

11. A valid Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one) and a commitment to child safeguarding

12. Experience with assistive technology and adaptive resources is advantageous

13. Experience collaborating with allied health professionals such as speech pathologists and occupational therapists is highly valued
